44. HARMONIC ASTROLOGY (John Addey)

I. Inner Mode

Method's Worldview Celestial cycles are organized into numerical harmonics — vibrational levels, each of which reveals a particular layer of reality. Just as musical overtones generate from a base note the richness of sound, planetary positions multiplied by natural numbers (n) create "harmonic charts," each reflecting a distinct life theme. The universe is a multilayered vibrational system.

What Is Considered Reality Reality is organized in harmonic series: the base chart (the 1st harmonic = the natal chart itself) is the visible level; higher harmonics are subtler and more specialized layers. The 4th harmonic describes embodiment in matter, the 5th — creativity and pleasure, the 7th — inspiration and spiritual seeking, the 9th — completion and wisdom, and so on.

What Is an Event Within the Method An event is the activation of a specific harmonic level through a conjunction of planets in the corresponding harmonic chart. Crisis periods arise when difficult-to-process themes (harmonics with challenging aspects) are activated by transits.

Role of the Subject The subject is a multilayered being, each stratum of which is described by its own harmonic chart. Integration of the various harmonic levels is the path to wholeness. The method allows investigation of specific aspects of the personality through specialized charts.

Role of Time The natal moment is the base for all harmonic charts. Transits and directions are applied to each harmonic chart separately, creating a multilayered chronological analysis.

Purpose of the Method To investigate specific thematic layers of the natal chart (creativity, sexuality, spirituality, crises) through specialized harmonic charts, to reveal hidden aspects not visible in the base chart, and to apply harmonic analysis in psychological astrology.

Language and Key Concepts Harmonic, n-th harmonic (H4, H5, H7, H9…), conjunction in harmonic, John Addey ("Harmonic Anthology," 1976), David Hamblin, harmonic conjunction, harmonic transit, harmonic orb, numerical vibration, resonance.

Principles Governing the Transmission of Knowledge [Principles of knowledge transmission in this tradition are being documented together with method masters]

II. Analytical Mode

Origin Authorial (John Addey, United Kingdom, 1976; developed by David Hamblin, Michael Murray, and others); roots in Indian Jyotish astrology (vargas / harmonic divisions), adapted through a Western analytical approach; the publication "Harmonic Anthology" (1976) is the foundational text.

Functional Type F1 — diagnosis of thematic personality layers through harmonic charts; F2 — interpretation of harmonic configurations; F3 — forecast through harmonic transits.

Data Type D1 — symbolic external data: date, exact time, and place of birth for constructing the base natal chart and subsequent harmonic transformation.

Interpretation Mechanism C1 — structural (dominant): mathematically precise harmonic transformation of the chart; C3 — archetypal: numerological meanings of harmonics (5=creativity, 7=inspiration, etc.); C2 — cyclical: transits and directions in harmonic charts.

Temporal Granularity T0 (natal moment as the base for all harmonics), T2 (transits through harmonic charts), T3 (life trajectory through harmonic periods).

Level of Determinism Moderate. Harmonic charts describe potential and thematic content, not a rigid scenario. Emphasis on psychological self-exploration through harmonic analysis.

Scale of Applicability Predominantly individual; applied in psychological astrology and therapeutic consulting.

Limitations High technical complexity: working with multiple charts simultaneously. Non-obvious interpretation of high harmonics (H12, H16…). Limited expert base — a narrow specialized school. Dependence on precise birth time.

Ethical Risks Risk of excessive analytical fragmentation of the personality into "layers" without synthesis. False sense of a complete picture when interpreting individual harmonics.

Degree of Verifiability Low in strict empirical science. Within the tradition — the level of theoretical elaboration is above average, but practical verification of forecasts is limited.

III. Comparative Mode

Intersections by Data Type D1 is shared by all astrological systems. The mathematical transformation of the chart connects Harmonic Astrology with Cosmobiology (Ebertin) through shared interest in formalized structural methods.

Intersections by Mechanism C1 (structural) intersects with Cosmobiology (midpoint matrix as a formalized method); C3 (archetypal numbers) — with Numerology; C2 (transits) — with Western Astrology.

Differences in Ontology Mathematical harmonic transformation of the chart is a fundamentally new methodological layer not present in traditional Western astrology. It brings astrology closer to a musical-mathematical model of vibrational reality.

Differences in Level of Determinism Moderate, close to psychological astrology; emphasis on self-knowledge rather than prediction — in contrast to predictive branches of Western Astrology or Jyotish.

Areas of Partial Compatibility With Jyotish — vargas (zodiac sign divisions) are the analogue of harmonics; applicable in parallel with demarcation of traditions. With psychological Western Astrology — an organic complement.
