Geomancy is one of the oldest formalized systems of divination.

"The science of sand". Its Arabic name, ʿIlm al-Raml — "the science of sand" — points directly to its origin: the method was born as a tradition of making random marks in the sand.

The path to Europe. From the twelfth century onward, Latin translations of Arabic treatises brought geomancy to medieval Europe, where it became one of the most structured symbolic systems available.

16 Figures — Foundation of the Method

Binary code of 4 rows. At the heart of the method lie 16 figures, each a binary code of four rows (one or two dots per row, 2⁴ = 16 combinations).

Constructing the Geomantic Shield

From 4 Mothers to 16. The practitioner generates four "Mother" figures by making random marks. From these, through formal mathematical operationstransposition and XOR — twelve more figures are derived:

  • Daughters
  • Nieces
  • Witnesses
  • The Judge
  • The Reconciler

All 16 positions together form the geomantic shield — a symbolic map of the situation.

Archetypal Meanings of Figures

Each figure carries an archetypal meaning:

  • Viaflow
  • Fortuna Majorlasting success
  • Carcerrestriction

Linkages of figures. Each is linked to a planet, an element, and an energy type.

Reading the Shield

  • The first twelve positions correspond to the twelve astrological houses — enabling analysis of specific life domains
  • The Witnesses reveal the causes and development of the situation
  • The Judge indicates the overall trend

Uniqueness

Strictly binary and mathematically self-contained. Geomancy is unique among divination systems in that all derivative figures are determined from the initial four through formal operations.

The binary family. This kinship links it to the I Ching and the Mayan calendarthree systems with a genuinely binary structure.

Place in Errarium

At the intersection of randomness and archetype. Within the Errarium platform, geomancy is treated as a symbolic combinatorial system operating at the intersection of randomness and archetypal interpretation.
