31. HISAB AL-JUMMAL (ARABIC NUMEROLOGY)

حساب الجُمَّل · Hisab al-Jummal

I. Inner Mode

Method's Worldview Each letter of the Arabic language carries a numerical value that has existed since the beginning of time. Arabic is the sacred language of the Quran, and numbers within it are not merely counting but codes of Divine attributes. Knowing the numerical value of a name allows one to read its hidden meaning.

What Is Considered Reality Arabic letters are manifestations of the Names of God in the world. The numerical values of words, texts, and dates connect the visible world with the invisible. Abjad is a key to the hidden layer of reality (batin — the inner, esoteric dimension).

What Is an Event Within the Method The manifestation of numerical harmony or disharmony between a person's name and the date of an event. A fitting day is one whose number "resonates in unison" with the number of the name and the intention.

Method Focus the numerical value of letters, names, and words as carriers of hidden qualities and meanings

Role of the Subject The seeker of hidden meaning in names, texts, and dates. In the Sufi tradition — a practitioner who deciphers Divine messages through numerical analysis.

Role of Time A specific date carries a numerical value; the selection of a favorable time is based on numerical compatibility.

Purpose of the Method Revealing the hidden meaning of names and texts. Selecting favorable dates. Creating protective amulets (hijab). Interpreting the Quran through its numerical layer.

Language and Key Concepts Hisab al-Jummal (حساب الجُمَّل, numerical counting — the formal name of the system), Abjad (أبجد, letter ordering used for counting), Ilm al-Huruf (علم الحروف, science of letter properties — the metaphysical layer), batin (hidden meaning), zahir (manifest meaning), hijab (amulet / protective talisman), maqam (station / level of numerical value), wafq (numerical square-talisman).

Principles Governing the Transmission of Knowledge [Principles of knowledge transmission in this tradition are being documented together with method masters]

II. Analytical Mode

Origin Traditional method (Semitic proto-alphabet, V–III centuries BCE; systematic development in Islamic civilization from the 7th century CE). Based on two fundamental numerical matrices: Mashriqiyya (Eastern, widely accepted) and Maghribiyya (Western, North African). Used in Sufi hermeneutics, poetry, and astrology.

Functional Type The method is historically divided into three applied disciplines: (1) Ilm al-Huruf (science of letters) — F2 (interpretation of hidden meanings in texts and names); (2) Ilm al-Wafq (science of numerical squares) — F3 (creation of talismans and protective amulets); (3) Hisab al-Jummal (letter counting) — F4 (date selection, chronograms) and F1 (diagnostics of name parameters).

Data Type D1 — symbolic external data (Arabic name, text, date).

Interpretation Mechanism C3 — Archetypal (letter = attribute of the Creator); C1 — Structural (correspondence table). Includes three levels of calculation: Mujmal (basic direct count); Tafsil / Mabsut (expanded count, where each letter is decomposed into the letters composing its name, e.g., م is calculated as م-ی-م); Saghir (small count — reduction of multi-digit numbers to digits 1–9).

Temporal Granularity T0 (specific moment / event date via chronogram), T3 (theme of the name as an unfolding life path).

Level of Determinism Depends on the applied discipline. In hermeneutics (Ilm al-Huruf) — moderate (semantic vector). In talismanics (Ilm al-Wafq) — strict (rigid algorithmic binding of number to result).

Scale of Applicability Individual (name analysis), textual (sacred texts, poetry), event-based (date selection).

Limitations

  1. Strict algorithmic binding to the 28-letter matrix. 2. Vulnerability to orthographic variations (inclusion or exclusion of the symbols Hamza ء, Ta marbuta ة, Alif maqsura ى critically changes the resulting number). 3. The working matrix must be firmly fixed before calculations begin: the Mashriq and Maghrib standards assign different values to the letters Sin, Sad, Dad, Za, and Ghayn. 4. When analyzing non-Arabic names (Persian, Turkish, Sindhi), specific graphemes are forcibly reduced to the base 28 sounds, leading to loss of phonetic precision.

Ethical Risks The use of Ilm al-Wafq (creation of protective amulets) intersects with religious prohibitions of orthodox Islam. Commercialization of "numerical name selection." Risk of profanation through conflation of spiritual practice (dhikr) with applied magic.

Degree of Verifiability Low in the scientific sense. Internally verifiable exclusively under strict adherence to the chosen axiom system (specific matrix + unified orthographic calculation standard).

III. Comparative Mode

Intersections by Data Type D1 is shared by Chaldean Numerology, Pythagorean Numerology, and Kabbalistic Gematria — all work with letter-number correspondences. The closest structural analogue is Gematria (Hebrew).

Intersections by Mechanism C3 (archetypal) intersects with Gematria, Tarot, and Chaldean Numerology — a shared logic of number as carrier of hidden meaning.

Differences in Ontology Ontology is rooted in the Islamic understanding of Arabic as a sacred language. The Gematria and Abjad systems are structurally similar but ontologically independent: different traditions, different languages, different theological foundations.

Differences in Level of Determinism More an instrument of interpretation and choice than of fate prediction. Softer than the Chaldean and Vedic systems.

Areas of Partial Compatibility With Gematria — as parallel numerical languages of the Semitic tradition for comparative analysis. With other systems — only as independent fields, without conflation of tables or interpretive frameworks.
