Jyotish (Vedic Astrology)
Jyotish (jyotisha, "science of light") is one of the six Vedangas — auxiliary disciplines for the study and application of the Vedas.
Antiquity and continuity. Its roots extend into the first millennium BCE. Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Sarvartha Chintamani laid the foundation of a tradition that remains alive and evolving in India and across its diaspora.
The sidereal zodiac. Unlike Western astrology, Jyotish is based on the sidereal (stellar) zodiac, creating a divergence from the tropical system of approximately 23 to 24 degrees.
Three Principal Components
- 9 grahas — planets, including the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu
- 12 bhavas — houses
- 12 rashis — signs
27 Nakshatras — The Defining Feature
Lunar mansions. The defining feature of Jyotish is its twenty-seven nakshatras — lunar mansions, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac.
Birth nakshatra = start of Dasha. The birth nakshatra determines the starting dasha — a planetary period whose quality shapes the character of one's early years.
The Dasha System — Primary Predictive Tool
The most detailed forecast. The Dasha system (Vimshottari Dasha, 120-year cycle) is arguably the most intricately developed prognostic tool among all astrological traditions.
Multi-level structure:
- Maha-dasha — major period, 6 to 20 years, governed by a specific graha
- Antardasha — sub-period
- Pratyantardasha — sub-sub-period
Precision down to the week. This enables multi-layered temporal forecasting with precision down to the month and even the week.
Place in Errarium
Alongside astrology and Ba Zi. In Errarium, Jyotish stands alongside Western astrology (#1) and Ba Zi (#10) as a system that works with symbolic parameters of the moment of birth.
Principal distinctions:
- Sidereal zodiac instead of the tropical
- Emphasis on lunar nakshatras rather than solar signs
- Unique dasha system as the primary prognostic instrument
Indispensable for karmic work. This makes Jyotish indispensable for understanding karmic themes and life phases within the Vedic worldview.
