Graha
ग्रह · Graha (Devanagari)
RU: Граха
Graha (Sanskrit ग्रह, graha — "the seizer", "the one who takes hold") is a central concept of Vedic astrology (Jyotish) and Vedic numerology (Sankhya Shastra).
Key distinction. Unlike the Western notion of planet (Latin planeta — "wandering"), a Graha is not an astronomical body but a living cosmic archetype that "seizes" consciousness and directs karmic potentials.
The Navagraha System
The Navagraha system (Sanskrit नवग्रह, navagraha — "the nine seizers") comprises nine cosmic forces, each governing a number, a day of the week, signs of the zodiac and a corresponding Dasha period:
- Surya (सूर्य) — the Sun, number 1. Atman, the self, authority, the father.
- Chandra (चन्द्र) — the Moon, number 2. Manas (mind), emotions, the mother.
- Mangala (मङ्गल) — Mars, number 9. Energy, will, conflict.
- Budha (बुध) — Mercury, number 5. Intellect, speech, commerce.
- Guru / Brihaspati (बृहस्पति) — Jupiter, number 3. Wisdom, dharma, the teacher.
- Shukra (शुक्र) — Venus, number 6. Beauty, love, the arts.
- Shani (शनि) — Saturn, number 8. Karma, limitation, time.
- Rahu (राहु) — the North Lunar Node, number 4. Illusion, ambition, the worldly.
- Ketu (केतु) — the South Lunar Node, number 7. Liberation, spirituality, renunciation.
Numerical link. Each Graha governs a specific number in Sankhya Shastra (#30) — this is the foundation of Vedic numerology: the birth number activates the archetype of the corresponding planet.
Classification
Grahas are divided into benefic (shubha) and malefic (krura), as well as into natural and functional — depending on their position in the birth chart. Each Graha rules specific signs, houses and life themes, forming the foundation of Jyotish chart interpretation.
Practical meaning. The strength and quality of each Graha in a chart show which karmic themes will be active in a person's life and through which spheres (speech, action, relationships, work) these themes will manifest.
