Sankhya Shastra ("science of numbers" in Sanskrit) is the numerological branch of the Vedic tradition, closely related to Jyotish (#18).

Not self-sufficient archetypes, but masks of planets. Unlike Western numerological systems, it is organically embedded in broader Vedic metaphysics: numbers here are not self-sufficient archetypes, but expressions of the qualities of the planetary grahas that govern the entire Vedic worldview.

A living tradition. The system is described in classical texts and survives to the present day in the practice of Indian numerologists.

9 Numbers and 9 Grahas

  • 1Surya (Sun)
  • 2Chandra (Moon)
  • 3Guru (Jupiter)
  • 4Rahu (North Lunar Node)
  • 5Budha (Mercury)
  • 6Shukra (Venus)
  • 7Ketu (South Lunar Node)
  • 8Shani (Saturn)
  • 9Mangala (Mars)

Not a symbol, but a personified archetype. This makes each number not an abstract symbol, but a personified planetary archetype with its own mythology, qualities, and periods of rulership.

Three Key Numbers

  • Mulanka — the "root number", determined from the day of birth (for example, a person born on the 25th has a Mulanka of 7)
  • Bhagyanka — the "destiny number", calculated from the complete date of birth (analogous to the life path number)
  • Namanka — the "name number", derived from the sum of numerical values of the letters according to the Vedic correspondence table

Combined analysis of the three numbers. Reveals the person's inner nature, their destiny, and auspicious name.

Place in Errarium

The most integrated numerology. In Errarium, Sankhya Shastra is considered among numerological systems as the one most deeply integrated into the astrological tradition of its culture.

Numbers = masks of planets. While in Pythagorean numerology (#5) numbers are self-sufficient as archetypes, here they are "masks of the planets".

A complement to Jyotish. This makes Vedic numerology an instrument that organically complements Jyotish rather than functioning as an independent standalone system.
