Mulanka

Mulanka (Sanskrit मूलांक, mūlāṅka — "the root number", from mūla — "root" + aṅka — "digit") is the basic personality number in Sankhya Shastra (Vedic numerology, #30), also called the Jiva Number (जीव — "the living being").

Calculation. Computed by summing the digits of the day of birth down to a single digit (1–9). Example: 27 → 2+7 = 9.

Planetary Correspondences of the Numbers

Each number is ruled by one of the nine Grahas:

• 1 — Surya (सूर्य, Sun): leadership, independence
• 2 — Chandra (चन्द्र, Moon): receptivity, intuition
• 3 — Guru (गुरु, Jupiter): expansion, wisdom, optimism
• 4 — Rahu (राहु, North Node): unconventionality, rebellion, material ambition
• 5 — Budha (बुध, Mercury): communication, analysis, mobility
• 6 — Shukra (शुक्र, Venus): harmony, beauty, relationships
• 7 — Ketu (केतु, South Node): spirituality, mysticism, detachment
• 8 — Shani (शनि, Saturn): structure, trials, power
• 9 — Mangala (मङ्गल, Mars): energy, action, completion

Comparison with Other Systems

Mulanka corresponds to the "birth number" of the Pythagorean school (#5) and the "day number" of the Chaldean system (#29).

The fundamental difference. The arithmetic is the same, but the ontology is entirely different: the Vedic system rests on planetary archetypes (Grahas), not on universal numerical principles. A number is the "name of the planet" that rules a person.
