Tonal

Tonal · Tonal (Latin)

RU: Тональ

Tonal (Nahuatl: tōnalli — "ray of sun", "day", "destiny"; Spanish tonal) is one of the 13 numbers of the Tzolk'in, defining the active quality (tone) of the day's energy.

Combination with Nawal. Combined with the nawal (T023), it forms a unique kin — the unit of the 260-day cycle. The Tonal is the "how", the Nawal is the "what".

The 13 Tonals (Tones of Creation in Dreamspell)

  • 1 — Magnetic (Purpose)
  • 2 — Lunar (Challenge)
  • 3 — Electric (Service)
  • 4 — Self-Existing (Form)
  • 5 — Overtone (Radiance)
  • 6 — Rhythmic (Equality)
  • 7 — Resonant (Attunement)
  • 8 — Galactic (Integrity)
  • 9 — Solar (Intention)
  • 10 — Planetary (Manifestation)
  • 11 — Spectral (Liberation)
  • 12 — Crystal (Cooperation)
  • 13 — Cosmic (Presence)

The Mathematics of the 260 Kins

The full cycle. The combination: 20 nawals × 13 tonals = 260 unique kins.

Division of Functions

Tonal vs Nawal. The Tonal sets "how" the day's energy acts — intensity, phase. The Nawal sets "what kind" of energy it is — quality, archetype. Together they give the full characterization of a day.

Cosmological Significance of the Number 13

13 heavenly levels. The number 13 in Mesoamerican cosmology is connected to the 13 levels of the heavenly world — the structure of the Mayan-Aztec universe.

Translation note

Retain as 'tonal'. Note: different from the Castaneda tonal/nagual duality. In Tzolkin context, tonal is a numerical qualifier (1-13), not an aspect of the soul.
