Wu Xing

五行 · Wuxing (Chinese characters)

Wu Xing (Chinese 五行, wǔxíng — "the five movements", "the five phases", "the five elements") is the cyclical model of the five primary elements of Chinese natural philosophy, describing the dynamics of the transformation of Qi (氣) in all of its manifestations.

Not substances, but phases. Unlike the Indian Panchamahabhutas, Wu Xing describes not static substances, but movements — five qualitative states through which any transformation passes.

The Five Elements and Their Correspondences

  • Wood (木, ) — growth, spring, liver, anger, green
  • Fire (火, huǒ) — flourishing, summer, heart, joy, red
  • Earth (土, ) — stabilization, between seasons, spleen, contemplation, yellow
  • Metal (金, jīn) — contraction, autumn, lungs, grief, white
  • Water (水, shuǐ) — rest, winter, kidneys, fear, black

Two Main Cycles

The generating cycle (相生, xiāngshēng): Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. Each element nourishes the next, passing on its vital force.

The controlling cycle (相剋, xiāngkè): Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood. Each element restrains another, holding it in balance.

Applications

Wu Xing is the load-bearing framework for a whole range of systems:

  • Ba Zi (#10) — destiny calculation through the four pillars
  • Feng Shui (#22) — harmonization of space
  • Zi Wei Dou Shu (#23) — stellar astrology
  • Nine Star Ki (#24) — Japanese adaptation
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine — diagnosis and treatment

Comparison with Panchamahabhutas

The fundamental difference. Indian elements are static substances; Chinese ones are dynamic phases of continuous transformation. These are not two different "periodic tables", but two distinct ontologies of reality.

Translation note

Translate as 'Five Phases' (not 'Five Elements'). Wood in Wu Xing is a phase of growth/expansion — entirely different from tree as plant-ally in Druidic system (#23).
